Our University has been highlighted for its sustainability efforts in the international 2021 Sustainable Campus Index. A publication from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), the Sustainable Campus Index highlights innovative and high-impact initiatives from colleges and universities that submitted a Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) report in the most recent calendar year.
We have tied ninth as a top performer for the air and climate impact area and the Index highlights the University’s Sustainability Integration Program for Students (SIPS).

The Sustainable Campus Index (SCI) recognizes top-performing colleges and universities overall by institution type and in 17 sustainability impact areas, as measured by the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS).
The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. STARS was developed by AASHE with broad participation from the higher education community. The credits included in STARS span the breadth of higher education sustainability and are organized into four categories: Academics, Engagement, Operations, and Planning & Administration. University of Tasmania Sustainability Integration Program for Students (SIPS)
The Sustainability Integration Program for Students (SIPS) at the University of Tasmania links operational sustainability outcomes with student education and experience. Through participation in paid internships and fellowships, classroom activities, research projects and work-integrated learning placements, students create meaningful, measurable sustainability projects, contributing to the campus experience and operations. Past projects included the Sustainability@UTAS podcast series, sustainability tours, campus food gardens, food relief programs, energy and waste audits and incorporating Recycling Walls on campus. Since SIPS launched 10 years ago, over 203 sustainability projects have engaged more than 2300 students and over 104 staff from multiple disciplines and departments across all campuses.
