Tasmania’s Time to Shine

The Shine Tasmania podcast is celebrating the career and business accomplishments of Tasmanians.

A team of academics from the University of Tasmania’s College of Business and Economics recently launched a podcast celebrating successful Tasmanian business owners and career professionals.

The Shine Tasmania podcast was created by Dr Bronwyn Eager, Dr Toby Newstead, and Dr Gemma Lewis to share stories, inspire future generations and celebrate the journeys and accomplishments of Tasmanians.

"Tasmania has some amazing professionals, entrepreneurs and business owners," said Dr Eager. “We wanted to give them a platform to share their experiences, impart some wisdom and inspire the next generation."

"The podcast is hosted by PhD Candidate Sara Redman and named after ‘Shine Theory’, which is a belief in helping and celebrating each other so that we all rise together,” said Dr Newstead.

The team behind the podcast hopes to help young people who are feeling overwhelmed about their work-related futures and unsure about what their careers might look like after school.

"Younger generations are expected to have upwards of five different careers and multiple jobs in their lifetime," said Dr Eager. "They're also often limited to imagining a future that is presented to them by members of their community.”

“By offering stories that ‘break out of the mould’, we hope to widen the scope of imagination of what young people can picture themselves doing.”

The podcast also highlights that career pathways, especially today, are rarely straight lines.

“While choosing university courses or college subjects can feel like you’re committing to a career, our podcast shows that by packaging your skills and passions in unique ways, you can create your own opportunities,” said Dr Lewis.

Season one includes seven episodes on a range of topics, including how Launceston’s Harvest Market went digital during COVID, the origins of the Blue Derby Pods Ride, how to launch a retail and interior styling business, and forging a career in the not-for-profit sector.

Listen to season one on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and subscribe for season two when it releases in 2022.
