Psychology Clinic expansion makes way for new referrals

The University’s Psychology Clinic is currently taking new referrals with a new Launceston-based clinic to open in July.

The University of Tasmania is actively training and graduating more clinical and professional psychologists to help with the current demand for psychological services in Tasmania.

The University Psychology Clinic currently operates in Sandy Bay with face-to-face appointments while providing state-wide services via telehealth.

The opening of a Northern-based clinic further increases opportunities for communities to access in-person psychology services.

“In 2021, we expanded our Hobart-based clinic which trebled the amount of consulting rooms and provided increased training placements for our postgraduate students, and increased availability of psychology services for the community” Professor Lisa Foa, Head of the School of Psychological Sciences, said.

“This year, we have expanded our post graduate course offerings and for the first time, we are teaching our Masters’ programs in the State’s North, which will enable the School to open a Launceston Clinic for psychology services in July.”

The University Psychology Clinic provides general and clinical psychology services for mental health issues including anxiety, stress and depression. Cognitive assessments are also available.

Clients can access therapy sessions or cognitive assessments with Master's students, who are under the supervision of an experienced and registered psychologist.

“There continues to be a huge demand for psychological services across the State,” Professor Foa said.

“By opening our Clinic’s books we’re hoping to provide another option for people in need.”

People interested in accessing the services of the University Psychology Clinic can either be referred by another health practitioner or patients may self-refer for therapy services. Health and education professionals are also able to refer people to the University Psychology Clinic for cognitive assessments.
