UHack 2017 an innovative and creative success

A ‘One Farm Control System’ app designed by a team from the North West Coast took out top honours at the University of Tasmania’s UHack event over the weekend.

The ‘Control Freaks’ team, whose app provides farmers with remote access to irrigation, earned the open division first place prize of $6,000 for its innovation, as well as ongoing mentor and start-up support.

This was also the first year Burnie had competed in the event.

Control Freaks was one of 20 talented teams of designers, innovators and entrepreneurs from across the state to came together for this year’s three-day UHack event, to compete for a record prize pool totalling $24,000 towards starting up their innovation or creations.

Teams worked to develop a software application or digital device, a business plan and a pitch video, and present it to a panel of industry leading judges.

University of Tasmania Chief information Officer Jeff Murray said UHack, which was part of the University’s Research Week, stretched the creative technology and business skills of all teams involved.

“UHack is designed to create a competitive environment stretching the creative technology and business skills of the teams,” he said.

“It is an excellent opportunity for Tasmania to showcase its unique ability to address vexing global challenges.”
