Riawunna, Centre for Aboriginal Education informs aspirations for university study with Aboriginal year 11 and 12 students

The University of Tasmania has goals of increasing the number of Aboriginal Tasmanians participating in higher education.

To do this, the Riawunna Centre for Aboriginal Education has piloted an aspiration informing program with Aboriginal youth in years 11 and 12 studying at Newstead College over the last few months.

The program has included a series of in-school aspiration informing activities and an on-campus visit, underpinned by relationship building with current Aboriginal students, Elders and Riawunna staff.

Positive feedback has been received from school staff and students in the program, with one student stating at the end of the campus visit, “Everyone at uni is really friendly”.

The program will be enhanced in 2018 to include more schools from across the state and formal evaluation of the outcomes.
