Senior representatives of four Australian and UK universities are meeting in Hobart this week to develop a benchmarking framework to guide academic promotion policy and practice.
The two-day benchmarking workshop beginning today (Thursday 29 November) at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) brings together leading academics from UTAS, the University of Wollongong and the universities of Leicester and Newcastle in England.
The workshop will allow the four universities to share information on and compare promotion policies and processes, as well as staff perceptions of promotion.
It will develop a benchmarking framework for presentation to participants at the Universities Australian Higher Education Conference in Canberra in late February next year.
"This project builds on a HEA report in 2009 on reward and recognition and internationally recognised work at the University of Wollongong," UTAS' Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students and Learning), Professor David Sadler, said today.
"The process includes the development of a self-review template with performance indicators and measures which can be applied across the higher education sector, nationally and internationally.
"The ultimate aim is to produce the resources to underpin the recognition of teaching as core to the assurance of standards in higher education."
Prof Sadler is a member of the Core Project Team, along with Project Coordinator Dr Sara Booth, who is the Head of the UTASâ€™ Student Evaluation, Review and Reporting Unit. The Australian project leader is Prof Sandra Wills from the University of Wollongong.
Eight Australian and seven UK universities are represented on the two international advisory groups.
This project has received funding from the UK Higher Education Authority. Workshop participants include the HEA's Dr Jeanne Keay and the Australian Government's Office for Learning and Teaching general manager, Suzi Hewlett.
