Inspiring body of work draws 2,000 in its first week

Art of the body: health, beauty and desire, an exhibition at Inveresk’s Academic Gallery, explores how the human body has inspired artists and scientists to invent, create and discover throughout the ages.

Including human specimens, objects, artworks and teaching materials, designed to stimulate debate exhibiting the benefits of nutrition, regular physical exercise, and well-being.

The exhibition is a partnership with MONA FOMA, Launceston College, the Launceston Big Picture School, and the University of Tasmania’s School of Medicine, College of Health and Medicine and the University College.

“The prestige of MONA FOMA in Launceston this year and the strength of our partnerships have allowed us the opportunity to promote the exhibition on a domestic and international level,” exhibition curator Dr Malcom Bywaters said.

“The opening of the exhibition drew more than 300 guests and by Sunday more than 2,000 people had visited the exhibition. We are thrilled to have had such great attendance at the opening and over the weekend - Sunday alone saw more than 1,000 visitors.”

Artists include Robert Boldkald, Michael Brown, Kathryn Camm, Peta Cook, Scott Cunningham, Christopher J. Edwards, Paul Eggins, Joanna Gair, Neil Haddon, Wayne Hudson, Eleanor Ivery, Liam James, Michael Kay, Sebastian Knevett, Kim Lehman, Sara Lindsay, Abbey MacDonald, Ben Miller, Danny Moynihan, Peter Powditch, Susan Rankine, Gary Shead, Anna van Stralen, and students from Launceston College and Launceston Big Picture School.

Art of the body: health, beauty and desire features loans from the University of Tasmania’s R.A. Rodda Museum, Special and Rare Collections, Fine Arts Collection, John Elliott Classics Museum, School of Physical Sciences Collection, the Rock Library and Geological Museum.

The exhibition will run until Friday 8 February 2018.
